How do I know how much to order?
First, you need to walk the landscape beds you wish to cover with mulch to try to figure out the dimensions (most people's large steps cover 3 feet). You can also measure with a tape measure as well. Then, decide how deep you want to make the mulch. Most arborists advise never going above 4 inches in depth. Plug in the dimensions (in feet) and the depth (in inches) of mulch desired into the mulch calculator. The calculator will compute how much mulch you need to order. Note that it also calculates the equivalent number of 2 cubic foot bags, so you can compare the costs of bagged vs. bulk mulch.
Should I buy bulk or bagged mulch?
There are situations where bagged mulch is easier to handle than bulk. However, you are paying for the added convenience. $3.00 for a 2 cubic foot bag of mulch equates to $40.50 per cubic yard. Why would you spend money on the individual bags and the labor to bag and unbag them if you do not have to? Bulk mulch is cheaper and looks better, too!
